We were really pleased when actor Gregory Cox and his wife Robin Miller, an ex-Chalk student, agreed to work with our students on the Wrote It? Quote It! performance projects this year.  Many of you will have seen Gregory as Pub of the Year judge in Coronation Street last October charming Sue Johnston as in turn she impresses him with the welcoming qualities of the Rovers’ Return.
I’m used to seeing Gregory on stage in more classic dramas like Shakespeare and Ibsen, so I was intrigued by his departure into soaps (he was also an auctioneer in East Enders recently).  “It’s a very respectable thing for theatre actors to do these days,” Gregory assured me, “since Sir Ian did it everybody’s at it.”  Sir Ian McKellen played con man Mel Hutchwright for ten episodes of Coronation Street in 2005 ending any snobbery his fellow thespians might have felt about telly soaps.  “It’s also, of course, lots of fun,” says Greg. And I suspect it pays a bit more than appearing in finely-crafted classics or fringe experiments plus you don’t have to do the same thing every night and twice on Saturdays for months on end.
I was hoping Gregory as Laurence might return to the street and get his leg-over Gloria, Sue Johnston, in a romantic interlude but Gregory’s lips are sealed.  We’ll be cross-questioning him further during Wrote It? Quote It! so watch this space.
